The trio raced back to Fred’s room and two of them casually ensconced themselves on the sofa, in a fashion bordering on the casually erotic fulfillment. Fred paced, his mind uncontrollably generating words like aiding and abetting, accomplice, patsy, and relief. After twenty minutes EU cops, resplendent in bulky, black, bullet-resistant but not proof, flak jackets with “EUROPOL” inscribed somewhat haphazardly in mustard yellow on the back were on the seventh floor. Fred saw them through the peephole he’d been monitoring, and said to Vince: “The cops are here! How can you get out?”
Vince said; “Cops. Cops. You said it and didn’t realize. These cops are EU, Europol, not even American, for whatever that’s worth in bogus disability claims and payments. They’re not looking for me or us. The last thing they want is to come close to is a killer with a gun. No, no, no, no, no. They’re trained to act tough with old ladies silently praying near abortion clinics and sit in front of a computer and ‘day gubmint issue sail foam’ playing surveillance tapes, and occasionally sending out messages asking for the public’s help in doing their job for them. That’s it. We can walk out of here untouched whenever we feel like it.”
