Flashback – Too Spaced to Get Organized

“Sober Nerds and the Shimmering Past”

The drawer stuck as it always had, stubborn with the kind of resistance only decades of forgotten receipts and brittle rubber bands could cause. Eleanor gave it a tug while Paul steadied the lamp on the desk. Dust motes danced like flitting ghosts in the late morning sun.

"What are we even looking for?" he muttered, squinting through his bifocals.

"Not looking," she said. "Just ..... rummaging. You never know what’ll surface.”

Among birthday cards from people long moved on and manuals for kitchen appliances they no longer owned, they found it; a dog eared copy of The Alt Lifestyle Zine, circa 1978; Fleetwood Mac on the cover, Stevie barebacked and wide eyed.

Paul chuckled before he even saw the headline. “Oh lord, this one.”

Eleanor unfolded the periodical, and there it was, in a garish yellow font that looked like it had been drawn by someone on their fourth pot of coffee: “Too spaced to get organized? Sober Nerds can help.”
