The Orchard of Still Minds
Nobody quite remembered when the Orchard Society arrived in the quiet town once known as Snoqualimie, Washington. At first, they were harmless; a group of serene strangers who wore linen robes and offered orchard -fresh apples on street corners, smiling as if they knew something you didn’t.
Marla, a barista with a penchant for conspiracy podcasts and ironic tattoos, found them amusing. Her friend Jude, a struggling folk musician, called them "mindful nutjobs" but admitted their apples were unnaturally crisp.
It started with meditation circles. Then came shared meals under the stars. Their mantra; “Shed Thought, Feel Truth,” was whispered like a lullaby. The townspeople, slowly drawn in, found their anxieties slipping away. No one fought anymore. The mayor stopped holding council meetings. The library became an “Empty Wisdom Hall” filled only with pillows and humming.
Marla resisted, documenting everything in her notebook. But even she wasn’t immune. One evening, she accepted an apple. It tasted like memories; her childhood in a rust stained trailer, her mother’s laugh, the sensation of wind through cracked windows. She cried. They welcomed her.
