At the heart of the town, in a small café, a group of friends huddled together. Among them was Sarah, a marine biologist who had studied tsunamis but never imagined facing one. Her knowledge of the ocean’s power only heightened her fear. She tried to reassure her friends, explaining the science behind the phenomenon, but her own voice trembled.
“Natural signs that could indicate an approaching tsunami include:
Strong or long earthquakes.
A loud roar from the ocean.
Unusual ocean behavior, such as a wall of water or a fast rising flood.
A rapid, unusual rise or fall in the water level.
Water receding from the coast, exposing the ocean floor, reefs and fish.
Unusually large ocean waves, which may only be visible in areas that are particularly exposed to open ocean.
If you see these signs, evacuate immediately.
But, we have only seen one of them, so reasons to worry are premature.”
