(4) Such unity also works on a thematic level. Shakespeare's entire sonnet cycle deals with the topic of love. This theme on love explores the two different facets or types of love: (1) the higher, spiritual type of love and (2) the lower or earthly physical type of love. Thus, the second part of the sequence complements the first part. Both parts of the cycle are necessary to complete Shakespeare's exploration and analysis oflove.
