In Windsor Park Master Page, Shallow, and Slender are preparing for their roles in the Herne the Hunter prank later that night. Slender also informs Shallow that he has spoken with Anne Page, and the two are ready to elope immediately after the fairies pinch Falstaff. In addition to knowing Anne by her white costume, Slender adds that he and Anne have devised a password so that they will know each other: Slender will say “mum” and Anne will respond with “budget.” The word mumbudget means secrecy or silence.
