his studies and “bachelorhood” that he is unable to function in reality and see the Welsh woman for the whore that she is.

 

In a related subplot, Sir Oliver Kix and Lady Kix hope to inherit Sir Walter’s wealth since they are distant kin to him. However, they can only inherit if they produce offspring; but Sir Oliver is sterile. Touchwood Sr. (the older brother, not father, to Touchwood Jr.), on the other hand, has the opposite problem: he cannot control his sexual desires and has not only produced a pack of children with his own wife, but he also must contend with a number of prostitutes whom he has impregnated as well. The situation has made Touchwood Sr. financially destitute. However, when he hears of Sir Oliver’s plight, he devises a fraud to cheat Sir Oliver by supplying him with a supposedly miraculous aphrodisiac and by secretly impregnating his wife. Touchwood Sr.’s scam works, and by the end of the play Sir Oliver is so joyful at the news of becoming of a father that he plans to help Touchwood Sr. out of all of his financial difficulties.

 

Touchwood Sr. is the first of the two buffoons in this play. The following set of characteristics that define Touchwood, then, may also contribute to define the buffoon more generally.
