To the designers I’ve worked alongside and been friends with over the years: thank you for the conversations during lunch breaks, the honest feedback after presentations, and the shared frustrations that became the raw material for this book. You know who you are. Every example in these pages is a composite, but the patterns came from watching you navigate the same challenges I was navigating, often with more grace than I managed.
The confidence to write a book about design leadership didn’t come from nowhere. To the mentors who saw something in me before I saw it myself, and who treated my thinking seriously and encouraged it: your belief mattered more than you know.
To the design community, online and off: the writers, speakers, educators, and practitioners who share their thinking openly and generously. This book stands on a foundation built by thousands of designers who cared enough to articulate what this craft is really about. I hope it adds something useful to that conversation.
To the product managers, engineers, and business leaders who gave me a seat at the table, challenged my thinking, and occasionally let me disrupt the entire conversation: working with you taught me that design leadership isn’t something that happens within the design team. It happens in the spaces between disciplines, where the interesting problems live.
To my family, for the patience required when someone decides to write a book while holding down a career and building side projects. Your support made this possible in the most literal sense.
And to every designer reading this who has ever sat in a meeting, seen the problem clearly, and wondered whether it was their place to say something: it is. This book is for you.
