Lake over Wind

Great Exceeding describes a central structure sagging under a weight it cannot fully carry, warning that decisive, even solitary, action is needed before the strain reaches a breaking point.

THE JUDGMENT

⼤过:栋桡,利有攸往,亨。

Great Exceeding: the ridgepole sags. It is fruitful to have somewhere to go; this brings success.

THE IMAGE

泽灭⽊,⼤过;君⼦以独⽴不惧,遁世⽆闷。

The lake rises over the wood: Great Exceeding. Seeing this, the wise person stands alone without fear, and withdraws from the world without regret.

WHAT THIS HEXAGRAM MEANS

Hexagram 28 follows Hexagram 27, Nourishment, in the received sequence: once a structure has been fed and built up, it can be loaded past what its middle was ever meant to hold. Great Exceeding pictures exactly that condition — four yang lines packed into the center, pressing outward against a single yin line at the bottom and another at the top, the weak ends unable to brace what the strong middle now carries. The whole g-158

ure reads like a roof beam bowed by too much weight resting on too little support at either end.

The Chinese name ⼤过 means the great one exceeding, or excess carried by what is substantial rather than by what is small — ⼤ marking that this is not a minor overreach but a major one, involving the central, load-bearing elements of a situation. Romanized without diacritics as da guo (the tone marks in Dàguò are often dropped in plain-text search and cita-tion), the hexagram is also commonly translated as Preponderance of the Great or Critical Mass, both pointing at the same image: a weight so concentrated in the middle that the ordinary supports at either end are being asked to do more than they were built for.

The judgment says the ridgepole sags, yet it is still fruitful to have somewhere to go, and this brings success. That pairing is deliberate: a structure under this much strain cannot simply be reinforced quietly from within, but neither is it doomed. The situation calls for a real move —

stepping outside familiar limits, taking on the excess directly — rather than waiting in place for the sag to become a break.

THE FIGURE

Hexagram 28 joins Lake over Wind, one of the sixty-four possible trigrams pairings. Lake is a still, open body of water resting above; Wind, here also read as Wood, is a tree or a beam supporting that weight from below. Together they picture a lake pooling over submerged timber — water gathering above what should hold it up, until the wood beneath is soaked through and asked to bear far more than dry lumber ever could.

In the six-line diagram, counted from the bottom, a single yin line opens the gure, four unbroken yang lines ll the second through fth positions, and a second yin line closes it at the top. Reading the line structure of the whole diagram shows the classic ridgepole shape: heavy, continu-159

ous strength concentrated in the middle four lines while only a lone soft line braces each end, exactly the imbalance the judgment names when it says the beam sags under its load.

THE SIX LINES

Read a line only if it came out moving (a 6 or a 9 in the coin method).

1

Care at the weak foundation BOTTOM LINE

初六:藉⽤⽩茅,⽆咎。

Laying down white reed grass as a mat beneath the offering. No blame.

The rst line describes laying down white reed grass as a mat beneath an offering — a small, almost excessive act of caution at the point where the structure is weakest. No blame follows, because at the start of a period of overload, extra care at the base costs little and prevents much; treating the foundation gently is good sense, not timidity, when everything above will soon bear real weight. This line does not describe the strain itself, only the wisdom of preparing the ground before the load arrives. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 43 — Breakthrough, showing that careful groundwork now sets up a decisive resolution later.

2

An unlikely renewal takes root SECOND LINE

九⼆:枯杨⽣稊,⽼夫得其⼥妻,⽆不利。

A withered willow sprouts new shoots at the root; an older man takes a young wife. Nothing is unfavorable.

At the second line, a withered willow sprouts new shoots at the root, and an older man takes a young wife: nothing here is unfavorable, because an unconven-tional pairing or a late-stage renewal can genuinely revive something that looked spent. This line sits just above the weak foundation and just below the packed strength of the center, drawing on both — old capacity meeting new vitality in a way that looks unusual but works. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 31 — Inuence, suggesting that mutual, honest responsiveness between two unlike parties is exactly what makes this renewal take hold.

3

The beam sags under the load THIRD LINE

九三:栋桡凶。

The ridgepole sags. Misfortune.

The third line states the hexagram's core danger without softening it: the ridgepole sags, and misfortune follows. This position sits deep in the packed center of yang strength, yet its own placement is too rigid and too isolated from the weak lines at either end to distribute the load properly — strength alone, applied without support, still breaks. This is the line that names the real cost of ignoring the overload rather than addressing it directly. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 47 — Adversity, showing that unaddressed strain leads directly into a period of real constraint.

4

The beam arches and holds FOURTH LINE

九四:栋隆吉,有它吝。

The ridgepole arches upward, holding rm. Good fortune, but there is difficulty from another quarter.

The fourth line answers the third directly: the ridgepole arches upward and holds rm, bringing good fortune, though difficulty still comes from another quarter. Closer to the yielding line at the top, this position pairs strength with enough exibility to bear real weight without breaking — proof that the same load, met with the right support, need not end in collapse. The remaining difficulty is a reminder that holding rm here does not mean every problem elsewhere is solved. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 48 — Village Well, suggesting that what sustains this structure must be maintained, not just discovered once.

5

Flowering without lasting praise FIFTH LINE

九五:枯杨⽣华,⽼妇得其⼠夫,⽆咎⽆誉。

A withered willow puts out owers; an older woman takes a young husband. No blame, but no praise either.

The fth line mirrors the second: a withered willow puts out owers, an older woman takes a young husband, and the result is free of blame but also free of praise. At the seat of authority, still within the overloaded center, this line shows that even a well-placed response to excess may go uncelebrated — owers on a withered willow are a genuine sign of life, not a permanent cure. The lesson is to value the honest outcome over whatever applause it does or doesn't receive.

When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 32 — Duration, showing that lasting value comes from sustained commitment, not one owering moment.

6

Wading past the point of safety TOP LINE

上六:过涉灭顶凶,⽆咎。

Wading through water so deep it covers the crown of the head.

Misfortune, yet no blame.

The top line pictures the most extreme image in the hexagram: wading through water so deep it closes over the crown of the head. Misfortune follows, yet there is no blame, because this line describes someone who carried the necessary risk all the way to its limit rather than turning back at the rst sign of danger — the outcome is difficult, but the intention was sound. This is the cost sometimes paid by whoever stands alone and acts when the structure most needed it. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 44 — Encounter, showing that even after being overwhelmed, an unplanned meeting can reopen a path forward.
