Mountain over Heaven

Great Accumulation asks you to hold restless strength in reserve, build real capacity through discipline, and release it only when the way is genuinely open.

THE JUDGMENT

⼤畜:利贞,不家⾷吉,利涉⼤川。

Great Accumulation: it is fruitful to stay true. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It is fruitful to cross the great river.

THE IMAGE

天在⼭中,⼤畜;君⼦以多识前⾔往⾏,以畜其德。

Heaven within the Mountain: Great Accumulation. The wise person studies the sayings and deeds of the past in order to build up their own character.

WHAT THIS HEXAGRAM MEANS

In the received sequence, Hexagram 26 follows Hexagram 25, Genuineness, which trusts spontaneous, unplanned action. Great Accumulation answers with the opposite discipline: strength that is stored, trained, and released only when the moment is ready to carry it.

The Chinese name ⼤畜 combines ⼤ (great) with 畜 (to accumulate, to raise, to restrain), and its pinyin can be read as Da Xu or, in the older 147

reading of the second character, Da Chu. It is also translated as Great Taming or Great Storage, because the same character 畜 covers both gathering resources and disciplining an animal until it can be trusted to work.

Both senses matter here: the hexagram is about building real capacity —

knowledge, wealth, skill, a herd, a following — and about the patient restraint that keeps raw power from being wasted on premature moves.

The image is Heaven contained within the Mountain: vast creative force held inside a solid, still boundary. Read as guidance, the hexagram does not ask you to suppress your ambition permanently. It asks you to let a

rm structure — study, saving, training, a mentor's correction — hold that ambition until it has matured enough to act with lasting effect rather than scatter itself in an early rush.

THE FIGURE

Hexagram 26 joins Mountain over Heaven. Heaven below is unlimited creative force; Mountain above is a xed boundary that neither hides that force nor lets it escape unchecked. The pairing describes containment used as cultivation, not suppression: a wall built around something valuable enough to be worth protecting while it grows.

In the six-line diagram, counted from the bottom, three yang lines rise

rst, forming the trigram Qian, then two yin lines sit above them before a

nal yang line closes the top, forming the trigram Gen. The three lower yang lines are Heaven's stored energy, pressing to advance; the two yin lines mid-gure act as gentle checks, holding that energy while it accumulates; the top yang line has passed beyond restraint entirely, opening into free movement.

THE SIX LINES

Read a line only if it came out moving (a 6 or a 9 in the coin method).

1

Danger calls for a full stop BOTTOM LINE

初九:有厉利已。

There is danger; it is fruitful to stop.

The rst line describes strength that wants to advance the moment it appears, before any restraint has been tested. The line's own text is blunt: there is danger, and it is fruitful to stop. This is not timidity; it is recognizing that an early push, however sincere, has not yet earned the standing to succeed. Whatever you are eager to start — a launch, a confrontation, a big ask — benets from one more deliberate pause. When this line changes, Corruption warns that neglected foundations decay quietly; the stop you take now is what keeps small negligence from becoming a larger repair later.

2

The cart withdraws itself SECOND LINE

九⼆:舆说輹。

The cart's axle strap comes loose.

At the second line, the cart's axle strap comes loose on its own, so the vehicle simply cannot proceed. Read this as a healthy internal check rather than a failure: something in you recognizes that conditions are not right and withdraws from the attempt before damage is done. There is no blame attached to this line, only prudence. Let the interruption do its work instead of forcing repairs mid-journey. The change to Adornment shows that this pause is best used for renement — polishing the presentation, tightening the plan — so the next attempt travels further than this one could have.

3

A ne horse, rmly held THIRD LINE

九三:良马逐,利艰贞,⽈闲舆卫,利有攸往。

A ne horse gives chase. It is fruitful to stay rm through hardship.

Practice defensive driving daily; it is fruitful to have somewhere to go.

The third line nally has real momentum: a ne horse gives chase, capable and eager. But the text immediately adds discipline — stay rm through hardship, practice defensive driving daily. Capability without ongoing vigilance invites an accident precisely because the horse is fast enough to outrun caution. Keep training and checking your position even as you gain speed; do not mistake early success for permission to relax. The change to Decrease reminds you that sustaining this pace may require deliberately trimming something else — rest, a side commitment, excess ambition — so the core effort stays sound.

4

Restrain the danger early FOURTH LINE

六四:童⽜之牿,元吉。

A young bull wears a crossbar on its horns: great good fortune.

The fourth line places a crossbar on a young bull's horns before the animal has grown strong enough to gore anyone. This is preventive restraint applied early, and the text calls it great good fortune precisely because it costs so little compared to correcting a grown, unruly force later. Identify the habit, temptation, or unchecked impulse in your situation that is still small enough to redirect gently.

The change to Great Possession shows what this early discipline earns: once the danger is contained while young, real abundance becomes available to hold safely.

5

Gentle restraint tames the wild edge FIFTH LINE

六五:豮⾗之⽛,吉。

A gelded boar's tusks: good fortune.

The fth line gelds a boar rather than ghting its tusks directly — it removes the root of aggression instead of confronting the sharp symptom. This is a subtler, kinder form of restraint than the fourth line's crossbar, suited to a force already grown but still capable of being redirected at its source. Look for the underlying driver of a difficult behavior or dynamic, in yourself or someone you rely on, rather than only managing its visible edge. The change to Small Accumulation suggests the result is modest but real: gathering continues, just on a gentler, more manageable scale than before.

6

The crossroads of Heaven open TOP LINE

上九:何天之衢,亨。

One shoulders the open crossroads of Heaven: success.

The top line has moved beyond restraint entirely. One shoulders the open crossroads of Heaven, and the text simply says success. After lines of danger, checks, discipline, and gentling, the accumulated strength has matured enough that the mountain's containment is no longer needed; the way runs in every direction at once. This is the moment to act on what you have built, without second-guessing capacity you have already proven. The change to Peace conrms it: what was contained can now circulate freely, and a season of harmony between what you have gathered and how you use it follows.
