Earth over Lake

Hexagram 19 describes a strong, benevolent presence drawing near to guide others, its inuence growing while still gentle enough to earn trust rather than command it.

THE JUDGMENT

临:元亨,利贞,⾄于⼋⽉有凶。

Drawing near: great success. It is fruitful to stay true. By the eighth month, there will be misfortune.

THE IMAGE

泽上有地,临;君⼦以教思⽆穷,容保民⽆疆。

Earth rests above the lake: Drawing Near. The wise person teaches without end and shelters the people without limit.

WHAT THIS HEXAGRAM MEANS

This page works through the I Ching Hexagram 19 meaning in full: the received sequence places it right after Gu, the work of repairing what has decayed. Once corruption has been addressed, growth becomes possible again, and Drawing Near names exactly that opening: a strong, still-rising presence moving toward the people or situations that need its attention.

The Chinese name 临 (lín) means to draw near, to look down upon, or to oversee from above, the way a ruler visits a province or a teacher walks 111

among students. The hexagram is also commonly translated as Approach, the sense kept in this page's own web address. Two rm lines rise at the base of the gure while four yielding lines still occupy the upper ground, so the image is not a single arrival but a slow, structural gain of ground: inuence that grows because it is earned through steady presence, not seized through force.

The judgment's closing warning, that by the eighth month there will be misfortune, keeps the hexagram honest about time. Nothing that grows continues to grow forever; the wise reader treats a season of advance as a season, not a permanent state, and uses it to build something that can survive the turn.

THE FIGURE

Hexagram 19 joins Earth over Lake. Earth is receptive ground that stretches without visible limit; the Lake beneath it is a gathering of open water, glad and communicative. Together they show a broad, patient authority resting directly above a body that welcomes it, rather than a distant power ruling from afar.

In the six-line diagram, read from the bottom, two yang lines rise rst, then four yin lines ll the upper half of the gure. The lower trigram Dui, the Lake, is openness and quiet joy; the upper trigram Kun, the Earth, is receptive and nurturing. Strength is advancing from below while softness still holds the greater ground above it, so the whole diagram reads as condence increasing steadily rather than power imposed all at once.

THE SIX LINES

Read a line only if it came out moving (a 6 or a 9 in the coin method).

1

Sincerity at the rst step BOTTOM LINE

初九:咸临,贞吉。

Drawing near through genuine feeling: staying true brings good fortune.

The rst line begins Drawing Near with feeling rather than calculation: a genuine pull toward someone or something, matched by a position correctly aligned to receive it. Staying true to that honest impulse, rather than dressing it up or rushing it, is what makes the fortune good. Resist the urge to prove yourself immediately; let the sincerity itself do the early work. When this line changes, the reading turns toward Hexagram 7, Troops, a reminder that even a small, honest step forward needs discipline and clear direction behind it, or momentum alone will not hold formation.

2

Feeling proven by steadiness SECOND LINE

九⼆:咸临,吉,⽆不利。

Drawing near through genuine feeling: good fortune, nothing that is not favorable.

At the second line, the same genuine feeling that opened the hexagram has now been tested and found sound: the text repeats the phrase almost exactly, but adds that nothing here is unfavorable. This is a pull that has survived a second look. Trust it, and let your conduct stay as plain and consistent as it was at the start rather than escalating. The change to Hexagram 24, Return, suggests that this steadiness is really a homecoming: proven feeling does not need to conquer new ground so much as return honestly to what already works.

3

Sweetness without substance THIRD LINE

六三:⽢临,⽆攸利,既忧之,⽆咎。

Drawing near through attering sweetness: nothing favorable. Once this is met with honest concern, there is no blame.

The third line marks a shift from sincerity to performance: a step made pleasant on purpose, meant to win favor rather than to communicate anything true. The text is blunt that nothing favorable comes from this, because charm alone cannot sustain a relationship or a position once tested. Its remedy is equally direct: recognizing the emptiness with honest concern removes the blame. When this line changes, the outcome becomes Hexagram 11, Peace, showing that admitting the shortfall, rather than defending it, is exactly what opens the way to a healthi-er balance.

4

A complete, unhesitating step FOURTH LINE

六四:⾄临,⽆咎。

Drawing near completely, without reserve: no blame.

The fourth line stands closest to the ruling fth position and answers the sincerity of the rst line from above: drawing near completely, holding nothing back, brings no blame at all. This is the moment to stop testing the water and commit the full step you have already been preparing for. Reservation here would waste a position built for a wholehearted step forward. The change to Hexagram 54, Young Bride, marks this commitment as one made inside real constraints —

roles, timing, and expectations that still need honest, deliberate handling rather than assumption.

5

Authority earned through understanding FIFTH LINE

六五:知临,⼤君之宜,吉。

Drawing near through wisdom: tting conduct for a great ruler, good fortune.

At the fth line, drawing near becomes leadership: a ruling position that draws near to others not through command but through genuine understanding of what they need. The text calls this tting conduct for a great ruler precisely because it is knowledge, not rank alone, doing the work. Whether or not you hold formal authority, this line asks you to lead by seeing clearly rather than by insisting. The change to Hexagram 60, Restraint, suggests that wise authority also knows its own limits, applying itself with dened boundaries rather than without end.

6

Generosity at the furthest reach TOP LINE

上六:敦临,吉,⽆咎。

Drawing near with generous sincerity: good fortune, no blame.

The top line completes the hexagram with a presence grown mature: generous, sincere, no longer anxious about outcome. Having risen through feeling, proof, correction, commitment, and understanding, this position can afford warmth without calculation, and the text rewards it with good fortune and no blame. It is the furthest point from where advance began, and the most settled. The change to Hexagram 41, Decrease, ts this maturity: real generosity often means simplifying, giving something up willingly, rather than continuing to accumulate reach for its own sake.
