Heaven over Fire
Hexagram 13 asks you to join with others in the open, on shared and honest terms, rather than retreating into a narrow circle of family or faction.
THE JUDGMENT
同⼈:同⼈于野,亨,利涉⼤川,利君⼦贞。
Fellowship: joining with others in the open country brings success. It is fruitful to cross the great river; it is fruitful for the wise person to hold
rmly to what is right.
THE IMAGE
天与⽕,同⼈;君⼦以类族辨物。
Heaven together with Fire: Fellowship. The wise person accordingly sorts people by their kind and distinguishes things by their category, so that real fellowship can be told apart from mere closeness.
WHAT THIS HEXAGRAM MEANS
Hexagram 13 follows Hexagram 12, Standstill, in the received sequence: once a period where higher and lower could not communicate nally lifts, people are free to actively rejoin one another, and the text turns from blocked relation to open fellowship. The Chinese name 同 ⼈ literally means people joining as one; the character 同 carries the sense of sameness and shared purpose, so the hexagram names the deliberate work of 81
nding common cause across real differences, not merely tolerating the people around you. Some editions render it Fellowship with Men, and Your I Ching keeps that older title's underlying claim while using plainer language for it; in plain-English searches the pinyin often appears simply as tong ren, without its tone marks.
The gure sets a single yielding line at the second position among ve strong lines — the picture of one open, receptive presence that everyone else is drawn toward, provided that presence does not close itself off.
Read broadly, Hexagram 13 covers any effort to form real fellowship: a partnership, a community, an alliance, a shared cause. Its central caution is that fellowship extended in the open country, without favoritism, succeeds and brings fortune enough to cross a great river, while fellowship narrowed to one's own clan or in-group invites the very division it hoped to prevent.
THE FIGURE
Hexagram 13 joins Heaven over Fire: Qian above, high and expansive, and Li below, bright and clinging upward toward it. Fire's ame naturally reaches toward heaven, so the two trigrams share one direction and one intent — the classical image of people whose aims genuinely align, rather than merely standing near one another.
In the six-line diagram, counted from the bottom, ve strong yang lines surround a single yielding line at the second position. That lone yielding line is the gure everyone else in the hexagram is drawn toward, and how openly or narrowly it holds its company decides the whole reading. The lower trigram Li, Fire, carries clarity and attachment; the upper trigram Qian, Heaven, carries strength and untiring motion. Read together, the diagram argues that fellowship works when clear-sighted warmth below 82
is matched by tireless, principled strength above, not when one side dom-inates or the other hides.
THE SIX LINES
Read a line only if it came out moving (a 6 or a 9 in the coin method).
1
Open at the very rst meeting BOTTOM LINE
初九:同⼈于门,⽆咎。
Fellowship begins right at the gate, open to whoever passes: no fault.
The rst line places fellowship right at the gate, before any private circle has had time to form: whoever arrives is met plainly, without screening for rank or familiarity, and no fault comes of it. This is the moment to extend an introduction, a collaboration, or an honest word before habit narrows who you let in. When this line changes, Retreat counsels knowing when an early, open connection has run its natural course, and stepping back deliberately rather than forcing continued closeness once its season has passed.
2
Fellowship kept too close SECOND LINE
六⼆:同⼈于宗,吝。
Fellowship narrowed to one's own clan alone: this brings regret.
At the second line, fellowship contracts to one's own clan — family, faction, or the people who already agree with you — and the text names this plainly as regret, not fortune. The comfort of a closed circle is real, but it buys safety at the cost of reach: a narrow alliance cannot cross the great river the Judgment promises to an open one. When this line changes, Heaven counsels expanding toward untiring, principled strength rather than settling for the smaller security of a familiar in-group.
83
A hidden rivalry stalls the alliance THIRD LINE
九三:伏戎于莽,升其⾼陵,三岁不兴。
Arms lie hidden in the thicket, and the watcher climbs a high mound to look out; for three years nothing comes of the ambush.
The third line hides arms in the thicket and climbs a high mound to watch, yet three years pass with nothing gained: this is unspoken competition, a private bid to outmaneuver a rival for the same connection, kept out of sight rather than resolved. The longer it stays hidden, the longer the larger fellowship stalls without visibly breaking. When this line changes, Genuineness counsels bringing the calculation into the open and dealing plainly, since only honest dealing dissolves a rivalry that concealment only prolongs.
4
Standing down from a claim FOURTH LINE
九四:乘其墉,弗克攻,吉。
He climbs onto the rampart but does not carry the attack through: good fortune.
The fourth line climbs onto the rampart, in reach of pressing an advantage over a rival for the same alliance, and chooses not to attack: good fortune follows the restraint itself. Real strength here is recognizing a contest you could win and declining it because winning would cost the fellowship more than it would gain.
When this line changes, Household counsels turning that same restraint inward, toward settling and steadying the smaller circle you already answer to, once the larger contest is deliberately set aside.
84
Reunion earned through struggle FIFTH LINE
九五:同⼈先号咷⽽后笑,⼤师克相遇。
In fellowship, there is rst loud weeping and afterward laughter; a great force prevails, and the two at last meet.
The fth line moves from loud weeping to laughter: separation and effort come
rst, and only a great, sustained undertaking nally brings the two sides back together. This is not an easy or immediate fellowship; it is one that has to be fought for honestly before it can be trusted. When this line changes, Fire counsels holding to clarity and attachment through that struggle, since brightness sustained under pressure is what actually earns the reunion the line describes.
6
Fellowship kept at a distance TOP LINE
上九:同⼈于郊,⽆悔。
Fellowship kept out at the meadow, at a distance from the center: no regret.
The top line places fellowship out at the meadow, well beyond the center of activity, and nds no regret in the distance: some connections are meant to stay loose, cordial, and undemanding rather than close and binding, and holding them at that natural range is itself the sound choice. When this line changes, Radical Change counsels recognizing that a distant, low-stakes fellowship can nonetheless sit at the edge of a larger shift, one worth watching even from where you have chosen to stand back.
