Earth over Heaven

Peace describes a season when opposing forces meet and exchange freely, so small effort now sustains a harmony that still needs tending to last.

THE JUDGMENT

泰:⼩往⼤来,吉亨。

Peace: the small departs and the great arrives. Good fortune and success.

THE IMAGE

天地交,泰;后以财成天地之道,辅相天地之宜,以左右民。

Heaven and earth exchange: Peace. Rulers of old shaped this exchange into order, assisted what was tting in it, and so guided the people.

WHAT THIS HEXAGRAM MEANS

Hexagram 11 follows Hexagram 10, Treading, in the received sequence: once careful conduct has been tested against real danger and proven sound, the reward is a season where things nally go smoothly. Small forces yield and great forces arrive; what was cautious footing becomes open ground.

The Chinese name 泰 carries the sense of great ease, smooth passage, and things owing freely — it is why the hexagram is also translated as Prosperity or Greatness, though Peace best captures its central image of 71

two realms in genuine exchange rather than a xed calm. Read this way, the hexagram does not describe a nished, static harmony; it describes an active mixing, the small departing and the great approaching, that has to be kept in motion or it will settle back into stillness and separation.

The judgment names the small departing and the great arriving as good fortune and success. That reversal of the usual order — what is modest steps back so that what is substantial can move forward — is the mecha-nism of peace itself: nothing here is static, and the very freedom that created the exchange is also what a careless hand can let slip away.

THE FIGURE

Hexagram 11 joins Earth over Heaven: the light, rising force of Heaven sits below, while the heavy, settling force of Earth sits above. Instead of drifting apart along their natural directions, each is turned back into the other's path, so their energies meet and mix in the middle rather than separating toward opposite ends.

In the six-line diagram, counted from the bottom, three unbroken yang lines form the lower trigram Qian, Heaven, and three broken yin lines form the upper trigram Kun, Earth, directly above. This diagram places rising strength beneath a receptive, settling eld, which is exactly the situation the hexagram addresses: qi that would otherwise separate is instead held in contact, producing the fertile exchange the judgment calls good fortune.

THE SIX LINES

Read a line only if it came out moving (a 6 or a 9 in the coin method).

72

1

Rising together at the root BOTTOM LINE

初九:拔茅茹,以其汇,征吉。

Pulling up reed grass, root and all together. Advancing brings good fortune.

The rst line pictures pulling up reed grass and nding the roots come up tangled together, not singly. Nothing moves in isolation here: whatever step you take at the start of a favorable season pulls your allies, resources, or circumstances along with it. This is a good moment to act, provided you recognize you are not acting alone — bring others with you rather than advancing quietly by yourself. The line names advancing as fortunate, but that fortune is bound up with the company you keep. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 46 — Ascending, where the same momentum continues, carried further by steady effort.

2

Bold, undivided crossing SECOND LINE

九⼆:包荒,⽤冯河,不遐遗,朋亡,得尚于中⾏。

Embracing what is uncultivated, daring to cross the river without a boat, not neglecting what is distant, letting go of factions — one is honored for holding the middle path.

At the second line, peace calls for a wider embrace: tolerating what is still rough or undeveloped, daring to cross real risk without full preparation, and not neglecting people or interests that are distant or easy to overlook. This is the line that asks you to let go of narrow loyalty to a small circle and hold a genuinely inclusive course instead. It is demanding — courage and generosity together —

but the reward named is being honored for exactly that balance. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 36 — Dimmed Light, a caution that boldness without enough discretion can expose you to conditions where your intentions are misread.

3

Hardship inside a smooth season THIRD LINE

九三:⽆平不陂,⽆往不复,艰贞⽆咎,勿恤其孚,于⾷有福。

No level ground stays level forever; no departure goes without a return.

Facing hardship with steadiness brings no blame. Do not fret over being trusted; there is good fortune in one's daily provision.

The third line interrupts the ease with a plain observation: no level ground stays level, no departure goes without a return. Even amid genuine peace, difficulty resurfaces, and pretending otherwise only makes it harder to meet. The line's counsel is steadiness through hardship, not anxious effort to prove your trustworthiness — daily provision is already assured, so the real task is enduring the rough patch without losing your footing. This is the pivot line of the hexagram, the reminder that ease was never permanent to begin with. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 19 — Drawing Near, favoring closeness and attentive presence over withdrawal while difficulty passes.

4

Descending without waiting to be ready FOURTH LINE

六四:翩翩,不富以其邻,不戒以孚。

Fluttering downward, not waiting to be rich before joining the neighbors, trusting without being warned.

The fourth line pictures uttering downward toward one's neighbors, not waiting until wealthy or fully prepared before joining them, and trusting without needing to be persuaded. This describes generosity that moves ahead of its own justication: you reach out, share, or extend goodwill before circumstances have proven it safe to do so, because trust freely given is what keeps the exchange of peace genuinely mutual. Holding back until you feel secure enough would defeat the purpose. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 34 —

Great Vigor, where this openness matures into visible strength — power used well rather than power hoarded out of caution.

5

A costly gesture that secures trust FIFTH LINE

六五:帝⼄归妹,以祉元吉。

The sovereign Yi gives his younger sister in marriage; this brings blessing and great good fortune.

At the fth line, peace is sealed by a deliberate, personally costly act: the sovereign Yi gives his own younger sister in marriage, joining two houses through a gift that carries real weight rather than an empty gesture. This is leadership by example — securing an alliance or a relationship not through demands made of others, but through what you are willing to give yourself. The blessing and great good fortune named here follow directly from that willingness. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 5 — Patience, suggesting that having made the gesture, what remains is to wait sincerely, without forcing the outcome, for it to bear fruit.

6

The wall falls into the moat TOP LINE

上六:城复于隍,勿⽤师,⾃⾢告命,贞吝。

The city wall collapses back into the moat. Do not use troops. Issue orders only within one's own town; even with steadiness, there is regret.

The top line marks the point where peace, left untended, reverses: the city wall

— built from earth dug from the moat — collapses back into that moat, undoing the order it once represented. The counsel is restraint, not panic: send no troops, do not force a recovery by strength, and issue orders only within your own town, the ground you can still hold. Even steadiness here brings some regret, because the reversal has begun; the task is limiting damage, not pretending it can be undone. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 26 — Great Accumulation: what follows a collapse is slow rebuilding, not a quick return to ease.
