6. Fears and Responsibility
"Yesterday, we built a strong container for trust, a space where you can feel held and seen," Taran said while holding both of Selena's hands.
"Now, I invite you to walk through your fears with me. This involves articulating what scares you about intimacy and being truly seen, as well as how your intentions might be perceived," he explained, his gaze unwavering. "When you speak these fears aloud, they often begin to dissolve. Your vulnerability, long considered a weakness, will become your greatest strength."
Selena nodded, feeling an unexpected tightness in her throat. Her mind, which was usually so good at analysing and categorising things, suddenly felt like a tangled ball of confusion. She reflected on her lifelong tendency to listen rather than communicate. It wasn’t a dramatic fear, but a subtle, ever-present one.
"Sometimes I'm afraid of being 'too much'," she confessed. The words felt foreign yet profoundly true as they left her lips.
"For so long, I sensed and absorbed the unspoken feelings of others, becoming a quiet container for their experiences. I fear that if I truly opened up to others, with all my own depth and need for connection, I would overwhelm them. Or that my longing for depth would be mistaken for desperation."
The confession felt good in her stomach and chest. A wave of relief washed over her as if voicing it had already loosened her ties. She realised that she had held this fear tightly, guarding her inner storms and intense waves of LOVE from others.
Taran simply listened, his steady anchoring presence showing her that her truth was welcome. "We are never alone in these fears; we just usually don't talk about them," he said.
"And I'm afraid of failing at this," she admitted, her gaze falling to her hands. "Of not healing 'correctly' or not being able to offer this to others in the best possible way. I find myself measuring my progress and wondering if I'm reaching the right milestones. What if, even after all this work, I don’t fully embody ... well, authentic compassion, presence, and non-judgement?"
Selena paused, a subtle shift occurring within her. A loosening around her heart. The fears, once looming and oppressive, already seemed to shrink, becoming more like translucent veils.
Taran simply smiled. "Thank you for sharing this," he said.
"I suppose there are no milestones in the heart," she mused. "Only presence."
"You are right," Taran affirmed, his gaze deepening. "And to speak these truths, to acknowledge the very fears that have held you back - that is your success. You've already liberated something simply by acknowledging it."
"This," Taran continued, "leads us directly to the concept of radical emotional responsibility. As an empath, you naturally sense the emotions and struggles of others in your own body.
The wisdom of this path teaches us that any energy you perceive within yourself becomes your own personal process. This energy would not have come to you if you did not possess all the necessary tools and power to heal it within yourself."
Selena's eyes widened as a new understanding dawned on her. It wasn't about building a shield against others' pain or transforming it in others, but within herself.
"By cleansing and transforming these energies inside you," Taran emphasised, "you simultaneously help the other soul. In turn, you gain more strength, courage and power for your own journey. It's a win-win situation, a kind of alchemy of interconnectedness."
This way of thinking was revolutionary for Selena. She had once viewed her empathy as a draining burden, seeking to escape it through polite detachment and silence. However, she now saw it as a powerful conduit for healing. This shift moved her beyond her personal struggle and into an act of collective creative liberation. She no longer needed to protect herself; she was becoming a source of healing simply by embracing her humanity, with all her fears and vulnerabilities, and her immense capacity for LOVE.
