For whatever reason, you think it’s time you got into this pastime that everybody else seems to enjoy so much. But you don’t know where to start.

What kind of movies and TV shows do you like? That might be the best place to start. If you like comedies, then it’s likely you will prefer humorous books.

Last post I briefly speculated whether the first book influenced genre choice or whether genre choice was something that you were just born with. If you are just starting out on your reading path, then this is something you might be able to tell me about. Tell me what your genre choice is and what made you choose it.

In terms of reading and where to start, I’d say start small in your genre. The benefit storefront book stores like Barnes and Noble is that they allow you to browse and read books off the shelves before you buy.

I would pay a visit to your neighborhood bookstore and check out the shelves – starting with the types of movies and TV shows you like. Check out the comedy aisle.

The Barnes and Noble stores usually have one large set of shelving for Fiction – which means that it might be difficult to browse the genres successfully.

Don’t commit to an eReader until you are sure it’s going to be of value to you. For me, an eReader is of value because of the number of books I can take with me wherever I go. I read whenever I have a spare minute because I am a voracious reader. Carrying around physical books for me is just pointless because I would be lugging a suitcase wherever I go.

If you’re just starting out, an eReader might be a bit of an expensive outlay if you aren’t going to be reading as voraciously as I do. If reading PDFs on your computer is ok for you, then an eReader is going to be an unnecessary expense.

I can only suggest based on my own reading choices. I started out with the Nancy Drew series and once my tastes matured, I moved onto the Agatha Christie. Nancy Drew is a little juvenile and I probably would only suggest them for teens and young children. Agatha Christie is more mature but remains light and easy reading. And a modern day alternative to Christie is Sue Grafton.

I did ask our Twitter followers for input and one suggestion was to start with SciFi novels.

A friend of mine got started with the Dragon Lance series and to this day praises them as possibly the best starting point for a reader as anything else out there.
