“I’m so pleased we could meet up like this, Hannah. How long has it been? A year?” queried Audrey.
“Yes, it must be getting on for a year,” agreed Hannah with a smile.
“Tell me, who’s your latest heart throb, then? Didn’t you mention he’s named Angelo?” Audrey asked.
“Yes. We met when he came into the ice cream parlor on several occasions—alone,” Hannah sighed. “He always ordered vanilla with hot chocolate sauce; my favorite.”
“Is he the one I just saw you with, with a black patch over his left eye?”
“Yes. Isn’t it romantic? I keep dreaming he’s a one-eyed, swash-buckling pirate.”
“I hope he’s got a job? You’re not paying for his ice creams, are you?” Audrey was a wee bit jealous, because she didn’t have a man in her life at the moment and Angelo was a pretty impressive hunk of a man, if you liked pirates.
“Silly. He pays for them himself, and he always left me big tips before we started dating. We’ve been going steady for four months now. He doesn’t leave me tips anymore, but he pays for some of the best restaurants we go to.”
“So… what does he do?” Audrey continued her interrogation with a roll of her hand.
“Oh, he doesn’t work, now, although he was a Navy SEAL.”
“No way is a one-eyed man a Navy SEAL. I don’t believe it, Hannah. He’s duped you. He’s probably something to do with the mafia. Is his face scarred, too?”
“A wee bit, but that’s just it, Audrey. He was a Navy SEAL on a mission which went wrong through no fault of his own. That’s how he lost his eye and got the scars. He sued the munitions company for faulty equipment and won! Did I mention he’s a billionaire? He’s so laid back you’d never guess, would you? And, he’s hinted he wants to get serious with me.”
“Next, you’ll be telling me that he’s the father of your child and that he didn’t know he’d produced one, and that you’ve just met up again after five years…”
“What are you talking about, Audrey? You know I haven’t got a child.”
“But isn’t that what the majority of romance novels are about these days? He wasn’t a cowboy, or a CEO, so he had to be a Navy SEAL. I’m surprised he doesn’t have amnesia while he’s at it. He’s found you again, but doesn’t remember he ever knew you.”
“I think you’re just jealous, Audrey. I was going to introduce you, but as you seem to know how things pan out in novels, I’ll remind you that you’re probably the best friend who steals the boyfriend for a night. You’re the one who has the child without the man knowing, and then tries to win him for herself five years later. But I’m not going to give you the chance, because now, I’m not going to introduce you.” Hannah was obviously upset because after a moment’s thought she continued.
“Aren’t there novels where short people meet plump people and marry? Maybe you should read a few of them, because I would guess that is what the majority of people in this world are—ordinary. I’ve just been lucky and found myself a one-eyed pirate.
“Go out and find your own, Audrey!”
