“No, sir. Doesn’t seem to.”
Brown rose and followed the porter down the swaying corridor. The train rocked gently, the wheels humming a steady, soothing rhythm. When he reached the rear car, he found not a newspaperman but a boy; maybe fourteen, thin as a fence rail, holding a folded scorecard like a holy relic.
“Sir,” the boy said, “I’m sorry. I told the porter I was a reporter. I just ..... I wanted to meet you.”
Brown blinked. “At this hour?”
“I couldn’t sleep. I was at the game today. You didn’t pitch, but ..... you’re my favorite.”
Brown eased himself into the seat across from him. “What’s your name?”
“Calvin.”
“You from Pittsburgh?”
“Yes, sir. My father says the Cubs are a pack of thieves, but I don’t think so.”
Brown chuckled. “Your father’s not alone in that opinion.”
