Jack O’Neil crouches behind the plate, gives a sign, and Brown nods. He throws a fastball that tails in so violently O’Neil has to stab at it.
O’Neill stands, shakes his hand, and grins. “Mac, if you keep that up, we’re going to win a lot of ballgames.”
Brown doesn’t smile, but the corners of his mouth twitch. He looks out at the empty outfield, the pale sun rising behind the grand dome of the hotel, and thinks: Maybe this is the year I stop being the curiosity and start being the pitcher they remember.
