Retirement

Later in life Brown opened, owned, and operated a Texaco qas station in Terre Haute at the corner of Seventh and Cherry Streets. He also collected a pittance from the investment he had made in the Terre Haute Browns. He also made small money from managing the oil company teams on weekends. He remained popular, occasionally showing up in newspaper reports about old-timer games or columns about players’ lives after baseball. The service station quickly became a hub, attracting baseball players, sports writers, and the young who gathered to reminisce and converse about the Deadball era.

It may sound silly to some, but at least for a few seconds every day after his baseball playing years ended, Brownie would proudly remember that eighth day of October in the year of 08, when his victorious team carried him off the field at the Polo Grounds.
