Brown smiled; small, tired, but real. “Sure, son.”
He signed the ball carefully, the way he always had. The boy ran off beaming.
For a moment, Brown stood there alone, the streetcar rattling in the distance, the ballpark settling behind him. His arm ached, his pride ached, the season was a wreck; but someone still cared enough to wait for him.
And that, he thought, was something worth carrying home.
