He looked down at his hand; the twisted fingers that had once baffled the league, the hand that had carried him from farm fields to pennants to glory. It was the same hand. But the world around it had changed.
He whispered a line he half remembered from somewhere, maybe a magazine, maybe a poem Tinker had quoted:
“God grant you find one face there, you loved when all was young.”
He wasn’t sure who that face would be. Tinker, Kling, Sheckard. Maybe Chance. Maybe his wife. Maybe the younger version of himself, the one who believed the road only ever led upward.
The night breeze stirred. Brown straightened, adjusted his hat, and limped home through the quiet Cincinnati streets; an old champion still doing his work, even as the wheels ran down.
In 1914 Brown joined with other big leaguers and jumped to the short lived Federal League. There he was player/manager for the St. Louis team before going to Brooklyn. Between the two teams he was 14-11 with a swelling ERA of 3.52, neithr team a legitimate contender
