“Modern” baseball is considered to have started in 1901. The first World Series was held in 1903. The NL pennant winning Giants refused to play in 1904. From 1905 on there has been one.
Chicago was the best team of the entirety of the “first” decade, but the average fan and the average “expert” will almost invariably know more of the Pirates of Honus Wagner and the Giants of McGraw-Mathewson.
