The White Company is a band of English mercenaries fighting in the local wars in France in the 14th century under the command of Sir Nigel Loring. Expelled priest, runaway serf, disowned brother, poacher, archer, woodman, all were welcome in a company that had one great thing in common a fighting patriotism. From the moment that the great bell of Beaulieu Abbey is heard booming over that teeming quarter of mediaeval southern England as the Company are setting forth for France, till the day when the battle-scarred remnants struggle back from the wars, the listener is caught up in the lusty world of England in the making rude, rough, honest, kindly and true.
