Zebra: Horses but Monochrome

Zebras are social herbivores. Their striking black-and-white stripes make them one of the most recognizable animals.

Anatomy:

Zebras have long, slender legs, built for running at high speeds. Their most obvious appearance is their coat of black-and-white stripes. These stripes ‘may’ help with camouflage in the tall grasses of their habitat, as well as in regulating body temperature. We don't know yet! Zebras have eyes on the sides of their head for wide-range vision. Their hooves and incisor teeth are adapted for grazing on grass.

Evolution:

Zebras are closely related to horses and donkeys, sharing a common ancestor with them around 4 million years ago. The species evolved in the grasslands of Africa. The three main species of zebra—Grévy's zebra, the plains zebra, and the mountain zebra—each adapted to different environments within the continent.

Interesting Facts

  1. They communicate through vocalizations, ear movements, and body postures.
  2. Zebras are capable of running as fast as 65 km/h, which helps them evade predators.
  3. Unlike horses, zebras have not been successfully domesticated.
