Giraffe: Towering Browsers

The giraffe, with its iconic long neck, is a peaceful herbivore that roams the savannas and woodlands of Africa.

Anatomy:

Giraffes are the tallest land animals. Their long necks, which can be over 2 meters in length, are supported by just seven vertebrae—an adaptation for reaching high vegetation. They have a relatively short body with long, spindly legs and a tail with a tuft of hair at the end. Their coat is in distinct patches, which vary between individuals. Giraffes have long, muscular tongues, about 45 cm in length, which help them grasp leaves. Their large, almond-shaped eyes prove to have excellent vision over long distances.

Evolution:

Giraffes evolved around 16 million years ago from shorter ancestors that roamed Africa. Early giraffes had shorter necks, but over time, their necks grew longer. The evolution of this trait is believed to be influenced by competition with other herbivores for low-growing plants. Biological study shows that the giraffe's closest relatives were shorter, stockier creatures.

Interesting Facts

  1. Giraffes sleep for only 4-5 hours a day, often standing up.
  2. Despite their height, giraffes only need to drink water once every few days.
  3. A giraffe’s neck contains the same number of vertebrae as a human’s neck.
