Dolphin: Sapiens of the Sea

Dolphins are highly intelligent mammals known for their socialness, advanced communication, and critical thinking skills.

Anatomy:

Dolphins have long, curved dorsal fins and a powerful tail fin. Their skin is smooth and often grey or blue, with lighter underbellies. One of their most idolized features is their highly specialized brain, which is large relative to their body size and supports their cognitive abilities. Dolphins have a beak-like snout, and most species grow sharp teeth, useful for catching prey like fish and squid. They rely on echolocation, using clicks and whistles to navigate and hunt where visibility is low. Like Whales, dolphins too breathe through blowholes.

Evolution:

Dolphins belong to the order Cetacea, which includes whales and porpoises. They evolved from land-dwelling mammals that lived around 50 million years ago. The transition from land to sea is evidenced by the fossil record of early cetaceans like Pakicetus, the same ancestor of the Whales. However, early dolphins developed more slender fusiform bodies, and nasal sacs for underwater hearing and communication.

Interesting Facts

1. Dolphins have unique signature whistles, which are used like names, allowing them to communicate and recognize one another in their pod.
2. Dolphins engage in playful activities such as surfing on waves, playing with seaweed, and even interacting with boats and humans.
3. Dolphins have been observed using tools, like sponges, to protect their snouts while foraging on the seafloor.
