80.1 Short Biography - 2024
Dr. Nico F. Declercq joined the G. W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2006, at the age of 30. The Georgia Institute of Technology is located in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States, and is one of the country’s most prominent and most highly ranked universities.
Most of his activities take place at GT-Europe1, Georgia Tech’s first international campus in France.
Before this, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow of Belgium’s National Science Foundation at Ghent University2.
1Georgia Tech Europe was formerly known as Georgia Tech Lorraine.
2Declercq secured a postdoctoral position funded by the prestigious Belgian National Science Foundation (FWO-Vlaanderen) immediately upon completing his PhD. This fellowship allowed him to benefit from a three-year grant, with potential extensions of up to nine years. Despite his gratitude for receiving this grant, he faced significant challenges within the rigid Belgian academic system, which had already predetermined that he would not obtain a permanent academic position at his institution due to prearranged appointments for future vacancies. Consequently, he recognized that to avoid squandering a decade of his professional life, he needed to pursue opportunities on the international stage.

CHAPTER 80. THE AUTHOR’S ACADEMIC ANCESTRY AND CURRICULUM
Figure 80.6: When the author was a young student in the 1990s, his enthusiasm for science was rekindled, thanks to the inspiring passion of one of his teachers, Professor Oswald Leroy. When he later decided to pursue a PhD, he had only one condition: Professor Leroy had to be his advisor; otherwise, he would not have pursued it. The photo at the bottom middle shows Declercq’s three academic inspirations: his advisors, Oswald Leroy, Mack Breazeale, shown in Figure 80.16, and Laszlo Adler, shown in Figure 80.9.
Dr. Declercq earned his PhD in Engineering Physics, summa cum laude with congratulations from the Jury, from Ghent University in 2005, and his M.S. in Physics, cum laude, from the Catholic University of Leuven in 2000, with a major in Astrophysics.
As a Georgia Tech full professor, his research focuses on Ultrasonics in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Bioengineering, and Nondestructive Testing.
Additionally, he became a Professor Honoris Causa in Physics at the University of Allahabad in India.
Since 2015, Dr. Declercq has been the only tenured faculty of the Georgia Tech Woodruff School stationed at GT-Europe, providing unique research opportunities to undergraduate students. He teaches undergraduate and graduate students every semester, serves as a research advisor for Postdocs, BS, MS, and PhD students, and assists new faculty. Georgia Tech Europe offers academic programs for undergraduate students from Georgia Tech and other U.S. universities and graduate programs for students worldwide.
Nico F. Declercq’s academic journey is marked by scholarly productivity and strategic career decisions. As a PhD student, he published thirty papers in high-level scientific journals, establishing himself as a distinguished researcher early in his career. Despite receiving numerous offers in 2006, primarily from prestigious institutions in the United States, he chose to join the Georgia Institute of Technology3, influenced by his prior experiences in the southern United States and his interactions with Mack A. Breazeale and his wife, Louise Scott, in Mississippi. This decision was further validated when he discovered Georgia Tech’s campus in Metz, France.
Declercq’s move to Georgia Tech was driven by his desire to escape European academia’s hierarchical structures and to bring positive change within the European academic system by affiliating with an American university with a European presence. Although, ever the romantic, he initially accepted a faculty position below his established level of expertise, he saw it as an opportunity to advance quickly.
Navigating the European and American academic systems required a combination of idealism and pragmatism. The U.S. academic hierarchy lauds individual merit and autonomy, while European frameworks enforce rigid structures and centralized authority.
Declercq’s international profile further complicated his professional identity, as the divergent philosophies of funding and cultural values added complexity to his career.
Despite these challenges, Declercq’s approach, reminiscent of Stoic philosophy, emphasized personal duty and integrity in the face of external constraints. His experiences highlight the resilience and adaptability required to navigate disparate academic paradigms and underscore the relentless pursuit of academic freedom and knowledge.
Dr. Declercq is dedicated to fostering the growth and development of his students. He provides individualized support, believing 3Georgia Tech

Figure 80.7: Despite being gravely ill when he met the author, Mack Breazeale responded to the question of what they should eat with, "How about a Cowboy burger?" The first image, taken in 2009, shows the living room of the Breazeale household.
The second image, from July 2006, depicts a barbecue at the Breazeale farm near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The third image, taken in July 2009, features Mack and Lou Breazeale with the author’s two eldest children, Benjamin and Anna-Laura, in Oxford, Mississippi. Mack passed away later that year. He preferred his reclining chair for reading papers but, being unwell, sat in a rolling chair and asked the author to use his favorite chair for the 2009 photo. (Declercq de Silva Archive) every student deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. His student-centric philosophy drives him to invest considerable time and effort into ensuring that each student excels academically and professionally.
Since 2006, Dr. Declercq has established a state-of-the-art laboratory for ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of materials and taught classes for several semesters in Atlanta.
He is the recipient of the Early Career Award of the International Commission for Acoustics, shown in Figure 34.75 on page 548, and the International Dennis Gabor Award at the Hungarian parliament, shown in Figure 70.52 on page 1472, both awarded in 2006.
He has disseminated his research through over 100 papers in top journals, nearly 50 plenary, keynote, and invited presentations, and close to 200 conference presentations.
Dr. Declercq’s genuine interest in history, as described in Chapter 27.20.10, adds a holistic flavor to his classes. Combining his passion for history and acoustics, he has provided scientific explanations of acoustic effects in ancient monuments, including Chichen Itza (Mexico) and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus (Greece), and globally promoted the notion of Phononic Crystals in acoustics.
In 2019, he was a guest of honor and inaugurated an auditorium at a new physics department in Uttar Pradesh, India. Dr. Declercq does his best to mentor the students in his group and his classes, as demonstrated by his teaching awards, the multiple awards his students receive, and the support and guidance he provides them.
Although external directives in France have necessitated Professor Declercq to center his research primarily on the nondestructive evaluation of materials, his enduring passion for physical acoustics has continually influenced his work. Consequently, he has consistently integrated a robust physics perspective into his research, ensuring a more profound and comprehensive foundation than is typically seen in similar studies. Moreover, sustainability has been a persistent and guiding principle in his research trajectory.
From the outset of his academic career, he has diligently addressed problems within the sustainability framework, underscoring his commitment to this critical global imperative long before it became a hot topic for scientists and funding agencies.
Dr. Declercq’s dedication to students and his contribution to the success and reputation of Georgia Tech’s international program is demonstrated by numerous examples. He has always firmly stuck to his noble institutional, educational, and scientific mission in times of difficulty, both at the institute level and personally.
As an EU PromoDoc Ambassador in 2012-2013, Dr. Declercq advised North American students pursuing a PhD at a European University and provided better visibility for Georgia Tech on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 2015, he organized and chaired the International Congress on Ultrasonics (2015 ICU Metz), shown in Figure 80.1 and Figure
45.84 on page 844, one of the major conferences in this field. Despite Metz’s remote location, the fear of terror4, and the absence of standard congress facilities5, the congress was the most successful ever in this series and was held at the Arsenal of Metz6. The impact and success of the conference are demonstrated by the 700 participants7 from 53 countries,8 410 oral presentations, 170
posters, and 67 scientific sessions. The individual sessions were co-organized by the French Acoustical Society. Elsevier’s Physics Procedia published the 1268 pages of proceedings under the editorial supervision of Declercq.
Passionate about physics and engineering, Dr. Declercq is inspired to positively impact the world through his research and educational contributions and service to professional societies, including community building. He served on numerous PhD committees as President, Examiner, or Reporting Member. He has organized numerous sessions at international congresses and has constantly served as a reviewer for journals and congresses’ scientific committees. He has been an Associate Editor for the reputable European Acoustics Journal (Acta Acustica) since 2011 and Springer’s Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation since 2015. He is also an Academia Editor. In 2014-2016, he established a new journal Physics in Medicine, with Elsevier, and served as associate editor to support the initiative until the journal became sufficiently popular to merge with another Elsevier initiative in this field.
He has always constructively helped authors improve their work in his roles as editor or referee.
He has also served on the boards of the European Acoustics Association, the French Acoustical Society, the International Commission for Acoustics (as ICU representative), and the ICU steering committee as President until 2015 and Chairman until 2017. He served on award committees, such as the Stephens Student prize in Ultrasonics and the ICU Silver Whistle award committee as President. He was also a reviewer for the IEEE-UFFC Awards Committee.
Dr. Declercq served on numerous PhD committees and faculty recruitment and promotion panels at Georgia Tech and other institutes in Europe and worldwide. He has also been a referee for research grants in various countries.
As a physics student, he taught mathematics to children in Sri Lanka, which made him passionate about the genuine human curiosity and desire to learn, irrespective of gender, race, or cultural background. In the United States, he found the best University-level educational system globally, joined Georgia Tech with all his heart, and has consequently been teaching undergraduate and graduate students non-stop, primarily at GT-Europe since 2006.
He successfully provided inspirational guidance and technical training to more than almost 200 MS and undergraduate students 4Europe, and, in particular, France was under terror threat during that period.
5After 2015, Metz has been equipped with modern congress facilities in the city’s central district.
6Built on the orders of Napoleon III, between 1860 and 1864, the Ney arsenal in Metz is a specialized military building made of Jaumont stone and intended for the storage of weapons and ammunition. It is located adjacent to the chapel of Metz, a relic of a commandery of the Order of the Temple, dating from the 12th century and faces the Esplanade of Metz, within walking distance from the Saint Etienne Cathedral. The Arsenal is now a prestigious concert hall.
7Declercq worked hard to allow 30% students to join.
8Declercq put a lot of effort into allowing underrepresented global regions to participate too.

CHAPTER 80. THE AUTHOR’S ACADEMIC ANCESTRY AND CURRICULUM
Figure 80.8: Top-left: The tombstone of Mack A. Breazeale (1930-2009) and his first wife Joanne O’Dell (1932-1989) at Shipley Cemetery, 1645 Hickory Tree Road, Bristol, Virginia, July 2012. Mack’s second wife, Louise, is buried in Oxford, Mississippi with her first husband, Mr. Scott. Louise, who often referred to herself and Mack as "your American grandparents,"
knew Benjamin from a young age and visited Anna-Laura shortly after her birth. In 2012, Louise felt like a great-grandmother when holding Lambert. A language teacher with a fondness for French and Spanish, Louise had a keen interest in Dutch and Singhalese languages and had known William Faulkner in Oxford, where his daughter was her student. Sadly, she passed away later in 2012 after asking the author to take her to the Oxford cemetery to indicate her future burial site. Despite not being an excellent pianist, Louise enjoyed playing and giving brief lessons to Benjamin and Anna-Laura. In 2012, Louise is pictured with Benjamin and Anna-Laura in Oxford, Mississippi. Later that year, Lambert and Benjamin are seen in Helena, on the Mississippi River. Benjamin and Anna-Laura were delighted with the arrival of their brother Lambert in 2011. Lambert and Anna-Laura are also seen in Helena in the final image. The author completed his PhD when Anna-Laura was born and was in his final MS year when Benjamin was born. Mack Breazeale taught the author experimental techniques and scientific writing, significantly influencing his decision to pursue a career in the United States, along with Laszlo Adler (see Figure 80.9). They both helped the author break free from European academic constraints and demonstrated the true nature of American spirit and kindness. (Declercq de Silva Archive)
Figure 80.9: Nico F. Declercq, a Ph.D. student in 2004, was introduced to viscous damping effects in liquids and their impact on leaky Lamb waves by Laszlo Adler during a visit to Japan. Adler, a crucial mentor alongside Mack A. Breazeale, influenced Declercq’s decision to pursue an academic career in the United States in 2006. Adler served on Declercq’s Ph.D. committee in 2005. Laszlo Adler, son of Miklos and Ilona Adler, married Vera Princz, daughter of Armin and Janka Princz, in Toronto, Canada, in 1963. Holocaust survivors, they now reside in Florida with two children, Michael Adler and Susan Adler Wilk (married to Dr. Richard Wilk), and three granddaughters, Rachel, Hannah, and Talia. During WWII, Vera Princz Adler was smuggled out of the Miskolc Ghetto and hidden by a Christian family, surviving despite most of her family perishing in Auschwitz. Laszlo Adler endured forced labor in Strasshof, surviving near-starvation and beatings until liberation by the Russian Army in 1945. He returned to Debrecen to find most of the Jewish population, including his classmates, exterminated.

Other alums work as researchers in various Institutions worldwide, including Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS), Montreal, Canada; Technical University of Denmark; Institut National de Sciences Appliquées de Lyon in France; and GT-Europe.
Five of his M.S. students went on to receive their PhD degrees.
His commitment to diversity and inclusion is demonstrated in the demographics of his team.
He takes pride, finds the most excellent satisfaction in his students’ progress, and has written numerous reference letters to support their careers.
This book resulted from a lifetime hobby that served as a worthy pursuit throughout his education and career during numerous lonely evenings and travel inherent to his professional activity in a different research area. The accumulated result of the countless minor investigations provoked by his curiosity was consolidated into this manuscript as a tranquil Saturday and Sunday evening activity in the warmness of his family’s closeness.
As a student, Nico F. Declercq grappled with the stark reality of a feudal academic hierarchy marred by prejudice and an examination system not rewarding deep curiosity. Despite this, Professor Oswald Leroy, shown in Figure 80.6, was a beacon of fairness and intellectual brilliance. Leroy’s impartiality, fairness, and exceptional intellect starkly contrasted the prevailing system, giving Declercq a rare sense of admiration and fairness within academia. This admiration led Declercq to choose Leroy as his advisor when he embarked on his PhD journey. In addition to Leroy, Professor Mack A. Breazeale emerged as Declercq’s de facto co-advisor, offering further guidance and exemplifying scientific integrity and moral excellence. Leroy and Breazeale served as enduring models of ethical conduct and intellectual rigor, profoundly influencing Declercq’s academic path. As a PhD student, Declercq also had the good fortune to meet Professor Laszlo Adler, shown in Figure 80.9 on page 2002, who reinforced his belief that academia harbors individuals of genuine integrity amidst a broader landscape. Breazeale’s wisdom resonated deeply with Declercq, particularly the notion that while many hold the title of professor, few truly embody its essence.
The emphasis on integrity and genuine academic excellence seemed innate to Declercq. However, a genealogical study presented in this book revealed that these values were deeply rooted in his ancestry, aligning him with a legacy of integrity and academic pursuit.
The connection to his forebears illuminates the origins of his unwavering commitment to integrity and excellence in academia.

elsewhere. Lou insisted on Oxford because she thought of her beautiful
town as the center of the Universe. In the summer of 2006, he was

José Sánchez Real and the Kindness of the Supportive Catalan Historians and the Inhabitants
of Montblanc
As found in the next section, Chapter XVII, numerous people are acknowledged for their contributions in one way or another. Here, a person is highlighted who, in our modern age, produced the first pervasive work on the Desclergue family of Montblanc. Later researchers on this matter all followed in this Giant’s footsteps.
Dr. José Sánchez Real, a distinguished and esteemed historian hailing from Malaga, specifically Gaucín, boasts a remarkable academic trajectory that has taken him on a scholarly journey across various regions in Spain, including Gerona, Granada, Madrid, Tarragona, and Valencia. His scholarly odyssey commenced in 1973 when he received a prestigious commission from the Provincial Savings Bank of Tarragona, which tasked him with restoring the renowned House of Desclergue in Montblanc. This pivotal assignment spurred Dr. Sánchez Real into action, catalyzing his leadership of a cadre of young, zealous researchers to delve deep into the archives of the Church of Santa Maria la Mayor in Montblanc, as well as the extensive notarial archives in both Montblanc and Tarragona.
The fruits of their labor bore fruit in less than two years, resulting in the publication of a meticulously crafted magnum opus.
The expeditious completion of this scholarly masterpiece is a testament to Dr. Real’s exceptional acumen, his team’s proficiency in deciphering antiquated documents, and their unwavering commitment to the arduous task at hand, spanning nearly two years.
This illustrious tome, a seminal contribution to the annals of Spanish history, made its debut in 1974, a year before the birth of the author of the present work.
Delving deeper into the annals of Dr. Sánchez Real’s scholarly oeuvre, it becomes evident that his academic pursuits transcend the boundaries of history and extend into the realm of physics and other diverse subjects. His intellectual curiosity knows no bounds, as he fearlessly tackled topics of personal interest. His academic journey led him to attain a professorship in Chemistry at Tarragona in 1943, a significant milestone that laid the foundation for his subsequent pursuit of a doctoral degree in Chemistry at the University of Barcelona while residing in Granada. This monumental achievement was realized in 1948, though it is noteworthy that his doctoral thesis in Chemistry was not published until 1955.
In 1956, Dr. Sánchez Real ascended to the esteemed position of an academic chair, securing the title of a full professorship in didactics in chemistry at the Escuela Normal de Tarragona. A decade later, in 1967, he further solidified his academic legacy by becoming a professor at the Universidad Laboral de Tarragona. His pedagogical prowess was widely acknowledged, and in his capacity as the director of the Martí Franquès Institute, he even penned a comprehensive historical account of the institute’s storied past.
Notably, Dr. Sánchez Real ventured into diverse academic domains, authoring work on the physics of bicycles as a pedagogical stepping stone for readers embarking on explorations into mechanics, physics, electromagnetics, and related disciplines. Additionally, his literary output encompassed treatises on heraldry, ceramics, and specialized historical subjects, reflecting his insatiable intellectual curiosity and his unwavering dedication to expanding the horizons of knowledge.
Not surprisingly, he was also an archaeologist. Here are few sentences cited from ’Texto homenaje a la vida y la obra del Dr. José Sánchez Real.
Algo valioso.
In the context of acknowledging the contributions of José Sánchez Real, the author wishes to express profound gratitude to Josep Maria Grau Pujol for his invaluable assistance in procuring a wealth of historical documents pertaining to the Desclergue family and the town of Montblanc for several years. Mr. Pujol’s generous facilitation enabled the author to access scanned copies of original documents originating from both the Desclergue and de Pedrolo families, with indispensable assistance from Adelais de Pedrolo and the collaborative efforts of Miquel Ángel Farré Targa and his dedicated team at CU Arxiu Comarcal Urgell. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in the research process.

Furthermore, the author wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to Eduard Contijoch and the esteemed Mayor of Montblanc, Josep Andreu Domingo, for their warm hospitality and sustained engagement throughout this scholarly endeavor.
Lastly, the author fondly recalls the receptiveness, inquisitiveness, and benevolence exhibited by the residents of Montblanc over the years. Their spirit has left an indelible mark and has served as an enduring source of motivation in bringing this book to its culmination with utmost satisfaction.
Jairo Eduardo Cortés Rosal
The author extends his heartfelt acknowledgments to Mr. Jairo Eduardo Cortés Rosal, whose invaluable contributions played a pivotal role in unraveling the intricate structure of the Desclergues family history before their settlement in Montblanc.
The research endeavors that culminated in the creation of the second edition of this book were marked by a profound and fruitful collaboration, punctuated by extensive discussions, between the author and Mr. Cortés Rosal. During these scholarly exchanges, a serendipitous revelation emerged concerning the lineage of the Cortés ancestors. During one of these dialogues, Mr. Cortés Rosal casually mentioned Antonio de Torres y Córdoba, who was wedded to Juana Carrillo de Guzmán. This reference struck a chord with the author, as it prompted a reevaluation of a previously held assumption from the first edition of this work. In the initial iteration, the author posited that the descendants of Bertrand Du Guesclin bore the surname ’de Torres,’ originating from Soria.
This conjecture had been predicated upon existing literature and had remained unquestioned by the author until that momentous discussion.
Subsequently, the author apprised Mr. Cortés Rosal that the literature also alluded to the fact that not only the Desclergues but also the Fuentes, emanating from the Guzmán, Sandoval, and Zúniga lineages, traced their origins to these ’de Torres.’ This revelation cast doubt in Mr. Cortés Rosal’s discerning mind. As a medievalist with a profound knowledge of the historical events that transpired in Spain during the era of Bertrand Du Guesclin and possessing over three decades of experience in medieval genealogy, he deemed it implausible that Bertrand Du Guesclin would have sired offspring with a noblewoman from Soria. The comprehensive exploration of this matter is elaborated upon extensively within the pages of this second edition of the book, particluar in Chapter
Prompted by this dialogue, the author revisited archival documents, unearthing a deed from a bygone year, 1576, that bore the word ’Torró. In the first edition of his work, the author had interpreted this term, preceded by the word ’altissima F. Torró,’ as a notation by the notary alluding to Pere Desclergue’s noble lineage (DC01) and potentially linked to Bertrand Du Guesclin, perhaps even under the name ’de Torres.’ Mr. Cortés Rosal, equipped with his profound knowledge of medieval manuscripts, recognized it as a reference to a distinguished Torró, possibly a bishop. It logically followed that Bonaventura Desclergue must have served as the personal notary for this eminent individual. Traditionally, such a role was reserved for a close confidant within the family, thus underscoring the familial connection between the Desclergues and the Torró family. This pivotal revelation set the wheels of inquiry in motion certainly because in the first edition of this book, a person from Barcelona was mentioned who received a doctorate in canonical law in 1586 in Rome and carried the name Francesc Torró i Desclergue and was evidence of a consanguinity between the Desclergues and the Torró family.
In the ensuing weeks, Mr. Cortés Rosal diligently provided the author with a wealth of documents and references elucidating the Torró family’s history and their kinship with the Desclergues. Ultimately, it was discovered that ’altissima F. Torró’ was Francesc Torró i Desclergue, the half-brother of our forefather, Bonaventura Desclergue. In modern articles, Francesc Torró appears as Francesc Desclergue i Montseny because of his mother, who was a Montseny, but that is a modern assumption by contemporary genealogists, while the person himself signed with Altissima F. Torró.
In light of these transformative discoveries, the author expresses profound gratitude to Mr. Cortés Rosal for his unwavering dedication and scholarly contributions, which have been instrumental in tracing the lineage of the Desclergues family, extending back from Montblanc to Barcelona and Mallorca and ultimately reaching back to the depths of Occitania in the southern region of what is now modern-day France during the 1200s.
Jairo Eduardo Cortés Rosal is a Venezuelan-Spanish historian and genealogist who particularly earns all the credit for providing, for the 2nd edition of this book, the author with the enormous amount of information about the ancestry of Maria Ana Cortés de Monroy y Vega, described extensively in Chapter 27.2. Cortés Rosal created the Santa Fe de Bogotá Genealogy team, led by Fenita Hollman de Villaveces, in Bogotá. He is a descendant of Don Enrique de Guzmán, the Count of Niebla of the Ducal House of Medina-Sidonia. His grandfather is Juan Flórez de Ocariz, a Royal Notary in the Viceroyalty of New Granada in Santa Fe de Bogotá and was a great genealogist. He wrote the excellent work ’Genealogies of the New Kingdom of Granada.’ Apart from the exchanged information, the author is thankful for all his exciting and fruitful conversations with Cortés Rosal. For instance, the author learned more about the use of family names in Spanish history, the logic behind it, and how there were no firm rules like today. Also, the notions of stepson, stepfather, or stepmother were not used in the Spanish tradition. This is important in Chapter
29.11.3.3, for instance, or Chapter 34.12.3. In particular, by providing the author with the results of decades of investigations on the ancestry of the Cortés clan, including Hernán Cortés de Montoya and the author’s ancestor, Maria Ana Cortés de Monroy y Vega Bezan, the ancestry became more transparent and much better understood. Even the clans from Spain residing with the Desclergues in Kortrijk-Harelbeke-Deerlijk in the 1600s became clarified as they all belonged to the same extended family. Having a contact such as Jairo Eduardo Cortés Rosal, a medievalist and genealogist specializing in Spain and knowledgable of the history and ancestries in different additional countries of interest in this work, has proved extremely valuable and exciting and enriched the second edition of this extensive work.

Marcel Demeyere
The life of Marcel Demeyere (1943-2005) is documented in the scholarly publication titled ’Derlike,’ specifically in volume XXVIII, issue 1, dated 2005, pages 31-32. Mr. Demeyere played a pivotal role in the author’s educational journey as their initial history instructor during the academic year 1987-1988.
At the tender age of 11, the author made a significant decision to pursue ’Modern Education’ rather than the ’Classics.’ It was through the discernment of Mr. Marcel Demeyere, in conjunction with two other educators, namely Mrs. Marijke Martens, a Latin teacher hailing from Ghent, and Mrs. Maria Thoen, also known as Mrs. Content, that the realization of the author’s misjudgment dawned. They collectively determined that the author should transition to a Latin-Maths curriculum during their second year of Middle School, despite the resultant year’s delay.
Consequently, during the subsequent summer, the author diligently acquired foundational Latin vocabulary while in Sri Lanka and then joined the Latin-Maths program the following year, albeit one year behind their peers. The initial two months in this new academic environment were characterized by the necessity for patience, endurance, and, notably, unwavering support from Mr.
Demeyere and Mrs. Martens. The fruition of this arduous effort became evident within a few months.
Regarding mathematics, the author’s profound appreciation for the subject fully materialized in their university years. Instead, a preference for physics emerged, where their intuition played a more prominent role. History, though always an area of interest, could have presented a more professional opportunity. It is noteworthy that Marcel Demeyere maintained a close friendship with Pierre Vangheluwe, the author’s grand-uncle and foster father, as delineated in Chapter 69.11 and Chapter XVII.
The bond between Marcel Demeyere and Pierre Vangheluwe undoubtedly fostered mutual trust and the author’s admiration for Mr.
Demeyere. During the formative years of 10 to 12, Demeyere served as an exemplar of an intellectual, idealist, and philosopher. His distinctive attire, reminiscent of a professor, and possession of perhaps the most extensive stamp collection globally left a lasting impression. Additionally, his affiliation with Freemasonry and his ideological commitment to communism, a stance not shared by the author, further reinforced the idea that unconventional thinking was commendable.
High school provided the author with a backdrop of diverse and conflicting ideologies, offering a profoundly enriching experience.
Subsequently, the author opted for coursework in religion and atheistic morality, exemplifying their commitment to exploring and evaluating contrasting ideas. Through this process of questioning and balancing diverse viewpoints, wisdom and tolerance were nurtured—an essential foundation for intellectual growth.

Special Gratitude
The ultimate expressions of gratitude are extended to the author’s paternal great-uncle and nurturing paternal figure, Pierre Vangheluwe, whose multifaceted persona is also elucidated in Chapter 69.11. Pierre Vangheluwe, a man of remarkable sagacity, emerged as a self-taught scholar with a profound command of several languages. His unwavering commitment to correctness, honesty, reliability, diplomacy, and rationality cast him as an exemplar of virtue. Regrettably, circumstantial constraints precluded his realization of a lifelong aspiration to become an educator. He departed from this world three decades past, on July 8, 1991, leaving behind a final desire: that the author embark on a journey of scholarly pursuit culminating in attaining a university degree.
The author’s formative years were profoundly influenced by Pierre and his spouse, Jeanette Verbrugghe, who continued to provide unwavering support even after Pierre’s passing in 1991. Their profound impact enabled the author to remain steadfast on the path of academic achievement, ultimately resulting in acquiring a diploma, a doctorate, and the esteemed position of a university professor—all achieved by the age of 30. It is fitting to assert that Pierre’s benevolent intervention in 1987-1988, offering both refuge and an intellectually stimulating milieu for scholarly pursuits, was nothing short of a salvation for the author. In the eloquent words of the author, "he was the bedrock upon which the edifice of my intellectual pursuits was firmly established."
This book stands as a testament to the enduring intellectual curiosity instilled by Pierre Vangheluwe. Moreover, it is worth noting that the author’s familial ties were forged during voyages to Sri Lanka, a shared exploration facilitated by Pierre’s companionship and guidance.
’ Thank you.’

Our Home in Montblanc
This is our ancient family house in Montblanc. The mansion has been lovingly restored and now stands prominently in Montblanc’s central marketplace. Perhaps in the 1960s, while the Franco government was still in place, the area saw its first Belgian visitors. Later, it became part of contemporary Spain under King Juan Carlos and, more recently, King Felipe. Catalan was once again spoken openly in public under Juan Carlos after it had been outlawed. In the 1930s, it underwent the Spanish Civil War. If we go even further back in time, we occasionally see the appearance of a Republic, a Kingdom, and even the era of Napoleon.
Desclergue youngsters formerly played in the gateway. Jeroni Joan Desclergue, our paternal ancestor, used to hang around there. Later, his son Antoni visited the house several times. It all happened four centuries ago. It would be so fascinating if those walls could talk.
Echoes of Memory in Montblanc
The notion of home transcends the physical confines of walls and landscapes and encompasses memory, culture, and inexplicable affinity. In exploring the poignant experience of the author who felt an immediate connection to Montblanc, Spain—a place he later discovered he had visited decades earlier—these final words delve into the complexities of such connections. Is it a coincidence that he found himself drawn to his ancestral roots near Tarragona, or does it suggest a deeper, perhaps subconscious, link to place and past?
Montblanc, nestled along the Francoli River in the province of Tarragona, is steeped in history and legend. Known for its medieval walls and as a purported site of the Saint George legend, the town symbolizes the Catalan spirit, like the many regional spirits of magnificent Spain. Its cobblestone streets and gothic architecture serve as a backdrop to daily life and a repository of collective memory. When the author revisits Montblanc, he is not merely a tourist but a pilgrim tracing the invisible footprints of his history.
Psychologists suggest that the feeling of "being at home" can stem from various sources, such as familiar landscapes, ancestral connections, or cultural continuities. This notion is amplified by the theory of genetic memory, which proposes that certain memories or affinities can be passed down through generations. The author’s immediate sense of belonging in Montblanc raises the question of whether this connection is a manifestation of such inherited memories.
His initial visit in the late 1970s might have been a forgotten echo until his return. This inadvertent pilgrimage is a serendipitous alignment of his journey with Montblanc’s geographical and historical essence. The realization of a previous visit layers his experience with a sense of destiny or inevitability, suggesting that the connection to Montblanc is more than mere chance—it is a return to a once-known but forgotten home.
While the supernatural offers a compelling explanation for such profound experiences, a more grounded approach considers the psychological impact of place and memory. The author’s sense of home could also be influenced by shared human responses to environments that echo familiar ancestral landscapes. With its rich history and enduring cultural symbols, Montblanc might naturally evoke a sense of belonging that resonates with its own cultural and familial narratives.
The story of the author’s connection to Montblanc is a poignant reminder of the universal quest for belonging and identity. Whether through the lens of supernatural beliefs or the scientific perspectives on memory and genetics, the essence of home remains a compelling part of the human experience.
Montblanc stands resiliently along the Francoli River, serving as a physical locale and a metaphor for the journey of self-discovery and connection outlined in this book. It is a testament to how our pasts mold our present, the unseen threads that connect us to our ancestors, and the timeless pursuit of finding a place to call home.

The Desclergues of la Villa Ducal de Montblanc, 2nd ed., Omn., VOL. VIII

The Next Generation
The author’s privilege is to educate young and energetic students full of ideas and inspiration as a professor. As ageing begins, it is a comfort to discern that the past is passed while the future swiftly falls on the shoulders of a new generation.
Being a descendant of the Desclergues from Montblanc in Catalonia, Spain, and in the context of this book, it is natural to place our hope for a better future, amid environmental and economic challenges, into the hands of a new generation represented by such talented and dynamic youngsters as the Duchess of Montblanc, the Princess of Asturias.
The author sincerely offers Her Royal Highness his blessing and wishes her the best of luck in her educational endeavour and future exemplary function.

In the silent eloquence of a photograph, splendor whispers its own tale,
transcending words, stirring the soul, and safeguarding the history of the
city and the dukedom of Montblanc.
