Guatemala in the 1980s: A Genocide Turned into Ethnocide?

While the Guatemalan Truth Commission came to the conclusion that agents of the state had committed acts of genocide in the early 1980s, fundamental questions remain. Should we indeed speak of the massacres committed between 1981 and 1983 in Guatemala as “geno- cide”, or would “ethnocide” be the more appropriate term? In addressing these questions, this paper focuses on the intentions of the perpetrators. Why did the Guatemalan military chose mass murder as the means to “solve the problem of subversion”? In Guatemala, the discourses of communist threat, racism and Pentecostal millenarism merged into the intent to destroy the Mayan population. This paper demonstrates that the initial policy of physical annihilation (genocidal option) was transformed into a policy of restructurin...

Prospects for Meditation as an Intervention for Domestic Violence Batterers

In this paper I explore how and if meditation may be used as a tool of transforming domestic violence batterers (people who use violence and coercion with intimates), into peaceful, non-violent individuals. Previous studies on the effectiveness of Vipassana and Transcendental meditation used in prisons indicate that meditation has improved the subjective well being and quality of life of inmates through such determinants as reductions in the rate of recidivism, criminal propensity, and feelings of depression and helplessness. Though batterers are often not imprisoned for the crime of domestic violence, many batterers have similar issues as violent inmates, and recidivism is one of the greatest challenges to batterers intervention programs.
Since violence is learned, it is necessary to exa...

Honour Killings. The intersection of patriarchy, gender and religion

An honor killing or honour killing is the homicide of a member of a family or social group by other members, due to the belief of the perpetrators that the victim has brought dishonor upon the family or community. Honor killings are directed mostly against women and girls, but have been extended to men.
The perceived dishonor is normally the result of one of the following behaviors, or the suspicion of such behaviors: dressing in a manner unacceptable to the family or community, wanting to terminate or prevent an arranged marriage or desiring to marry by own choice, especially if to a member of a social group deemed inappropriate, engaging in heterosexual acts outside marriage and engaging in homosexual acts.

Comfort Women. In search for understanding

The Gender and Peace Studies course at the University for Peace focuses on how gender is intricately intertwined in every aspect of our lives. Throughout the course we have discussed the complex definition of “gender” and its relationship with family, science, war, human trafficking and prostitution, as well as religion. In entering this course, I had little understanding of the large role gender played in our lives. However, as I found myself seeking understanding on different global issues involving women, I realized that the only way for me to have a true understanding of how and why these acts of violence and oppression continue to happen in today’s society was to seek out the underlying premise of these issues, which was gender. One is the “comfort women” .

Vikki Hankins, an ex-felon and overachiever who was a victim of overzealous mandatory sentencing guidelines and now, is a pawn in the Florida political chess match. Hankins has a degree, a small business and a strong desire to help others. All she needs is her civil rights back.

But Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi won’t give them to her, or to the more than one million ex-felons wanting to be integrated back into society.

Gender Outside Of Heterosexuality

What is heterosexuality and what does it mean to be a female or male outside the institution of heterosexuality? Current ideas on gender identity, femininity and masculinity are heavily aligned to straight sexuality; this is seen through media, education, religion, history. How is ones gender identity
formed for individuals who do not identify with heterosexuality? What is the impact of heterosexuality and gender roles? These are the questions I explore in this independent research project.

Escaping Hell

This book reveals the nature of the God of this world, and through the logical process, shows the reader that we are living in hell. The book also reveals who and where God really is, the traps established by Lucifer to keep us here, how to transcend those traps, and even shows us why we cannot simply transcend this world and then immediately function in the universe without first being properly educated. Finally, the book provides a proper perspective on the creation from a scientific point of view, rather than the childish explanation provided by organized religion.

"It was so interesting with the facts and fictions, also I liked this satirical and ironic approach. Even more as a native German I found the book a very unusual apprehension of german-jewish history."

A historical novel and a thriller based on a PhD Dissertation from Columbia University. The book reveals dark secrets of Nazi plans in Central America to take over the Panama Canal and the hidden lives of both Nazis and anti Nazis, Americans and Germans who were trapped in love and hate stories. But the book is also a plight for women`s, Jewish and Gay rights.
