To my great aunt Elva Ward, whose youthfulness and joy were an inspiration to me as a
child, whose love of gardening was passed on to me, and who gave me an appreciation of
people and simple pleasures that have enriched my life. Thank you!
This collection of short stories, art, and poetry was neither invented nor planned. They
simply arrived, as friends may at your door unbidden yet welcome. It is my wish that
they may be as welcome in your mind and heart as they were to mine. Some are of
discovery, others of love, others of courage, others of the times in which we live and the
changes we are all part of, yet all are moments to be shared. Mixed in with the stories
and poems are a treat for adults – pictures. I have never forgotten how welcome pictures
were while I was reading a book as a child and have often mourned for their absence as I
grew up. Someone, whose name I no longer care to recall, once told me that adults don’t
need that sort of thing. I felt that to be foolishness – indeed we may not need them, but
why should we be deprived of them? We allow ourselves other luxuries after all.
Many of these stories concern the heart. The heart has been much ignored by us for too
long and to our great peril. The trend started bit by bit and was a process of becoming
more and more centered in our brains and not in our hearts. Truly, since the Renaissance
the brain has been valued more than the heart. The brain operates on polarity; Polarity is
in its very make-up, division - right and left hemisphere with differentiated function on
either side connected only by the corpus collosum in the middle.
