It is written in the first person, as if by the protagonist Harlan Brown.

I read this originally in the 70's as a timid young teen - with mixed up emotions - and now I've re-read it in my early 50's - it brought back so many memories - but also, it's a pretty good depiction of our status at that time and you really appreciate the advances in LGBT rights since then. Even though the prose can be sometimes 'ordinary', the story is superlative...even to this day.
