Pilgrimage tells the story of one man's search for redemption. Jean Bellimont - scribe to the Bishop of Troyes - journeys to Santiago de Compostella to seek absolution for murdering a beggarwoman. On the way, he is charged with retrieving a stolen relic, becomes involved in deadly disputes between the Church and heresy, and befriends a nun, a former crusader, a heretic, and a hunchbacked dwarf. Set in 13th Century France and the first of a trilogy, the novel draws a convincing picture of a medieval pilgrimage wrapped within a compelling story of true drama that lasts until the last page. I am a recruitment consultant with a strong interest in European medieval history, and endeavour to weave that knowledge into my story lines. My travels throughout Europe (and particularly France) over the past thirty years allows me to bring a first hand acount of the places I describe, and provides an air of authenticity to my narrative. I am a passionate and committed writer, and Pilgrimage is the first of the series featuring Jean Bellimont, Scribe of Troyes. Refer to my website for news on my upcoming book, 'The Lirey Shroud Mystery', as well as an exciting new competition where the reader is invited to guess "whodunnit"!

Great! Well paced, interesting, well informed. I have done part of that same Pilgrimage and I can tell that the author had done a lot of serious research. Thanks for writing!
This is an excellent read at several levels, and provides some interesting history lessons as well. The characters and the times are brought realistically to life.
Mr Whitton has written 3 novels in this series based on Jean Bellimont. I recommend you read them in the sequence they were written. Pigrimage is first, then A Fatal Homecoming, and finally A Convenient Solution. If you read them out of sequence it may spoil some surprises for you.
All three novels in the series are well worth reading. I very much hope Mr Whitton writes many more.
The book had an interesting enough premise but the characters, dialogue and the action were as two dimensional as the pilgrim's path they followed, fearing to venture off the road. The "surprise" twist at the end was a gimmick that added nothing to the story.
i really enjoyed this book - I felt it captured the period well, lots of atmosphere and detail. Great twist at the end - didn't see it coming! will look for other books by this author.
Interesting plot, well rounded characters and really evokes the era. I liked the humour threaded through the story and the twist at the end caught me by surprise.
France, 1308. Whilst King Philippe continues to challenge the Papacy, Jean Bellimont (oblivious to such politics) is leading a quiet, contented life as scribe in the city of Troyes. When his Bishop is arrested on spurious charges and Pope Clement sends an envoy to investigate, Philippe responds by dispatching two of his most trusted Knights. Within days, one of the Cardinals is murdered, and Franc...
France 1310: In the woods near Troyes, a forester stumbles across the body of a stranger. As Bailli Dubois begins his investigation, it becomes apparent that the wife of his best friend is implicated. Hopelessly compromised, the Dean of the Guild of Merchants takes over the case. In the hope of uncovering new evidence, Henri dispatches his clerk - Jean Bellimont - to Paris. Amidst the squalor of ...
