Introduction to Emotional Intelligence with Money

How Your Guilt about Money Affects Your
Finances
“Guilt for being rich, and guilt thinking that perhaps love
and peace isn’t enough and you have to go and get shot or
something.” ~ John Lennon
Research by Burroughs & Rindfleisch (2002) found that
people’s mental health suffers when they value both family and
material objects.
Is it possible that our mental suffering stems from guilt and
the underlying belief that pursuing wealth means rejecting our
tribe?
When I was 10 my uncle told me that it was wrong to talk
about money and to choose a career based on money. I believed
him but I didn’t obey: I chose to study finance and economics
and not literature because being a banker promised to be more
lucrative.
The end result was that I could never get a job in finance
because I felt too guilty and ashamed. I felt I had done
something wrong so I became an entrepreneur.
