“I look up to the sky, there may be nothing there to see, but if I don’t believe in Him,
why would He believe in me?”

Chapter 1 - The Best of Friends
The automatic doors pushed open in front of them. Instantly they were exposed
to hundreds of stimuli. The loud noises of bustling shoppers, the multitude of odors
wafted in and out of perception. Tom Halbert turned to his best friend Eva Watson and
asked,
"So, where to first?"
“You pick!” replied Eva.
"I don't think so, it's your special day", said Tom acknowledging the importance of
the day.
"It's just my birthday,” tried Eva, but he wasn’t going to be so easily swoon.
"Hey it's not everyday you turn 18, whatever you want today, it's yours." said
Tom. She gave in.
"Ok Tommy, fiiine. My parents gave me a $300 Visa gift card for my birthday so
let's go shopping", breathed Eva.
“Lead the way m’lady”, Tom insisted.
Eva laughed in her trademark giggle. No one ever called him Tommy, just her.
Eva was a teenage beauty. She stood at around five foot, six inches. She was very
pretty, and boasted dark brunette hair with a pair of radiant emerald green eyes that you
could easily get lost in. She had a smile that could work wonders on the soul; anyone
who tried would utterly fail to not be lifted from whatever low they were in once gazing
upon it. She really did know how to light up a room. Tom was tall, standing at almost six
feet, with the standard Italian physical features of brown hair and eyes.
It was April and beginning to heat up, and the two friends were in their senior
year of high school, with plans to attend colleges just a few miles from each other, both
with high career aspirations. They had met in their freshmen year and got along so well
it was inevitable that they would become so close. Tom, however, had always had a
little more than friendship on his mind. He had secretly been in love with Eva almost
since they met. Obviously, for the sake of their friendship, he had confided in no one
this secret. He dated of course, giving the other girls in his school his attention while
simultaneously trying to ignore his feelings for Eva, but no one ever seemed to live up to
the standards he couldn't help set. The rest of their day together consisted of lots of
shopping, lunch at their favorite restaurant, and a walk through the park that separated
their respective neighborhoods.
"Thank you for everything today, Tommy. It was the best birthday ever", said Eva
looking up at him.
