Escape from Egypt is one of the most enjoyable and intelligent books I’ve read for years. It has everything; impeccable writing in a calm, unhurried style that draws the reader in, hooks him and makes him desire more. Add to this a wonderful plot that shifts seamlessly from amused observation to great tension as the story progresses, historical accuracy, excellent descriptions and information about numerous places and people, trenchant social scrutiny, philosophical insight and a profound sense of human decency, and you have a book everyone should read.
