This unique album was taken by a German Nazi who was empowered to go into the Ghetto and be a witness of the conditions the Jews had to endure before being sent to the extermination camps. A powerful number of pictures of people destined to death before they became aware of their doom.
The novel has four main themes.
(1) The lifestyle of the provinces is juxtaposed with that of the metropolis, as Balzac contrasts the varying tempos of life at Angoulême and in Paris, the different standards obtaining in those cities, and their different perceptions.
