"Bat Wing" is a detective story in the style of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. It is very exciting reading. I loved the old English manner in which it was written. The author through the eyes of Mr. Malcom Knox (the Dr. Watson Character) sets the stage of the English town, its color, its grounds, and its inhabitants. The mystery and secrets of the inhabitants kept me wondering what was going to happen next. It was even humorous and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I liked the development of the characters. You are given a clear picture of their personalities although their secrets are not devulged almost until the end. I did figure out who was the culprit before the end of the story, but I still enjoyed the book very much.
Kazmah the Dream Reader and other memorable characters populate this tale of terror, as sinister Eastern forces work to control the west through the opium trade. Sax Rohmer, creator of Fu Manchu, returns to the Yellow Menace theme that so characterized his work.
