Well, I finished the book. I'm sticking with my original assessment: too much filler (via lyrics) and the whole Roddenberry, Shatner, Oprah, et all thing just didn't work. While I appreciate paying homage to the significant people in trek, I don't think that this was the way to do it. It was too obvious and really didn't fit. The same with including all of the lyrics. I am about 2/3 through this book. So far, I am of mixed opinions. While I like the Preserver subplot, I really don't like the whole Roddenberry (sacrilege!!) part and the references to current people (or, their counterpart) on Iotia. Also, adding all of the lyrics to the musical references seems like John just needed something to fill the pages. I just flip past these parts. I will update my review once I have finished the book.
