Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen in 1821. As a writer Flaubert was a perfectionist, who did not make a distinction between a beautiful or ugly subject: all was in the style. The idea, he argued, only exists by virtue of its form - its elements included the perfect word, cunningly contrived and verified rhythms, and a genuine architectural structure.
The Dolliver Romance was the work that Nathaniel Hawthorne was working on at the time of his death. Hawthorne began working on it in 1858 after returning to the US from England, but put it aside for his Marble Faun. He began working on it again in 1861, as the Civil War started, and was still working on it in 1864 when he died suddenly.
The Door in the Wall is the story of a promising public figure used up by his job and obsessed by a vision of an enchanted garden he had known as a child. It is a tale all of us know, the attempt to recover a period when our lives were simpler and complications lay far in the future.
The Duel is the main and longest story, but I don't really think it was the best. It is the story about a man in the Caucasus and his troubles with his wife and a biologist which culminates in a duel. All the characters are excellently written, and the story was very well done, but the end leaves much to be desired, and seems like he tried too quickly to wrap up the story.
