Choosing a Great E-Reader Backpack for Spring

Warm weather is here – or will be soon for those who are still experiencing an unusually long winter. That means heading into the great outdoors – whether in a busy urban environment or in the natural wilderness. You may be headed to the subway, the nearest bike path, the beach, or to the mountains for some hiking or camping.

Maybe you’re just going to hang out in the park or enjoy a lunchtime picnic. Whatever the situation may be, you’ll want to have convenient options for bringing along your e-reader gadget as a trusted companion. As the popularity of e-books grows by leaps and bounds, so do the products to support that trend. These days it’s possible to find all sorts of backpacks and shoulder bags that are great for carrying electronics, and here are some ideas to help you shop.

Two REI Products

If you scoot over to the REI online store fast enough you can buy a deeply discounted Seattle Sports Dry Doc Kindle Case.

The simple case – which comes in either black or teal – is designed kind of like a zip-lock food storage bag, but in a much stronger and more durable style. The case can keep a Kindle or similar-sized device clean and safely protected from water. It is made of a PVC-free waterproof material that is also puncture-resistant, and REI has a stellar reputation for quality and customer service. Plus the discounted case now only costs about $7.

Another excellent e-reader case from REI is the Seattle Sports E-Merse Dry Max, which is waterproof and fits Kindle, Kindle Fire, Nook, and similar sized devices.

You can see right through it clearly enough to read while it’s protecting your gadget, too, which is a pretty cool feature if don’t want to stop reading even when the water is splashing all around you. It’s on sale now for about $20 at the online REI store.

Victorinox Altmont 3.0 Monosling

The sleek teardrop-shaped Victorinox Altmont 3.0 Monosling is a great option for those who want a small shoulder bag or backpack that is perfect for carrying just the essentials. As its “Monosling” name indicates, it has one sling that enables you to wear it as a cross-body bag, and inside the shoulder strap is a compartment large enough to hold a smart phone.

You can fit a full-sized iPad into the Almont Monosling, and it will accommodate a Kindle with a little extra room to spare for charging cables or ear buds. There are two main zippered compartments, and the bag is padded enough to provide a nice level of protection for your electronics. You can find them at the Victorinox site or at retailers like Amazon for about $40.

For an upscale fashion alternative for women, check out the Le Donne Leather Womens iPad/eReader Backpack Sling. While it lists for around $180 at the Le Donne website where it is sometimes available on sale for about $150, you can shop around and find the same item for about $100 on Amazon. In fact, there are about half a dozen different models of Le Donne e-reader bags available on Amazon, depending upon which style, function, and size you prefer.

These bags are available in several soft, buttery South American leathers and are specifically designed for carrying an e-reader, iPad or tablet and accessories like writing instruments. For women who want the convenience of a small backpack but also want a chic, classy, sophisticated bag this one may be an excellent choice.

Timbuk2 Bags

Timbuk2 is a popular line of bags and backpacks and they make shopping online for a way to transport your e-reader a whole lot easier. That’s because unlike most retailers, Timbuk2 offers you a feature that lets you search their product inventory by electronic device category. First you select the manufacturer, and they have many listed including the popular e-reader brands like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, and more.

After you select your manufacturer you’ll be able to access a scroll-down menu of various products and models. Once you have narrowed down your preferences the website search engine displays those that will accommodate your particular e-reader device. So you can choose Amazon Fire, for instance, or Amazon Kindle DX, and it will display those carrying cases, bags, and backpacks that are the right size for that specific device. Timbuk2 offers a wide range of products that are great for carrying along an e-reader, and they come in various price ranges from about $25 for a simple protective case up to $150 or more for a more versatile backpack or fashion-forward messenger bag.

Don’t Forget Your Stick Library

The “stick libraries” offered on this site are another essential item to help you carry your reading with you wherever the journey takes you. They are convenient USB sticks, available in ePub and Mobipocket formats, that are completely compatible with any e-reader, computer, or mobile device.

Each of these mini-libraries will hold 1,000 of your favorite titles, and all you need to read them is a USB port. You don’t even have to have a W-Fi connection and you can carry more books than you could possibly read in one summer in a format that’s about the size of your thumb.
